tarqeeb: mumbai's music maker

From Magnetic Fields Festival in Rajasthan to Dimensions Festival in Croatia, India's very own Tarqeeb shares a few of his life journeys and experiences with us.

What inspired you to begin your musical journey?

Music has been part of my life since I was very young. I have vivid memories of my mom blasting FM early in the morning to wake me up for school. I picked up playing the bass guitar in school and since then have always been around music.

You've played at huge music events, such as Magnetic Fields - which has been your favourite set?

Magnetic Fields was definitely one of my favourite sets. It was one of those times when I had a great slot (3.30am) and a very receptive crowd that was really ready for some bass music. Other than that I've had an amazing time playing at Bass Camp Festival over the years and also at Dimensions Festival, Croatia in 2015.

What has been your biggest accomplishment thus far?

I feel proud of the fact that I’m an independent artist and am living a relatively comfortable life with my beautiful wife in Mumbai! I do what I love every single day and that for me is a great personal accomplishment.

Do you have any advice for individuals who want to pursue music, but don't necessarily have the courage to publicise their work?

I'm a big believer of strength in numbers. An artist's journey can be hard and lonely, but the best way to grow , be inspired and get perspective & recognition is to surround yourself with likeminded people and also friends who practise the same discipline. Not being alone on this journey is half the battle won and you can make more bigger noise when have numbers.

When did you begin design work and what encouraged you to pursue it?

I would say that I'm still relatively new to design because i make a lot of art which has no use or purpose! I got into art while i was living in New York and started hanging out with a couple of kids from Parsons and going out to check out walls and installations. It was around the same time that I got into editing pictures on my phone which pretty much opened up a whole new world of creativity.

What is your ultimate goal with your talent in music and design?

I think all artists crave connection. The ultimate goal is to have my form of expression become something meaningful and possibly affect positive change :-)

What would you say are the pros and cons of being in the arts industry in India?

The pros are that the industry is growing rapidly which means there are a lot of opportunities and also the masses are now sort of understanding contemporary art which is not conventional! The downside is definitely that we are 20 years behind the west and that artists are grossely underpaid!

Who/what would be the dream collaboration for Tarqeeb?

There are too many to name! I find any form of collaboration in music and art super exciting and cross discipline collaborations really excite me as i get to learn something new :-)

Finally, what's your favourite type of cake?

Will have to go with a well done homemade chocolate cake.
